HOMER NARR2-PD/Ref@5505
The laboratory Mentor had left for Peter
Devore was small. There was little
equipment, only a room with ten
workstations, holo projection,
computation and simulation, databanks in
a small matrix. No different really from
similar labs at PSYCHE, or back in
Geneva or Springfield or Kuala Lampur.
The other rooms included a small
refectory, sleeping cells, a gym,
sanitation.
Down here the sound of ice overhead was
dim, a background din that gradually
became a kind of music to the fourteen
people at work. This would be their home
for more than a decade, they knew, and
they must grow accustomed to the sounds
and sights of their home.
Peter continued to train. He drove the
others as well, two hours a day, honing
their bodies. They all could stand as he
had done, on the ball of one foot,
motionless save that incremental turn.
They could stand perfectly still,
blindfolded, and wait for an attack
which, when it finally came, suddenly
and unexpectedly, was deflected easily,
without sound or wasted motion.
"We must be down there, at the matter
level," Peter told them. "We must know,
from the inside, what it is to make the
structure of our own bodies from the
patterns of force and energy with
nothing but our own minds. Then we must
expand that mind to encompass others.
Our bodies are the shape of our
discipline, nothing more. They give us a
focus, a form with which to work. Wanda
has no body. She can teach us what that
means."
